Why is a white cricket ball used instead of red in T20 and limited-overs cricket?

White cricket balls were introduced for limited-overs cricket primarily for visibility — under floodlights and in twilight or evening conditions, a white ball is significantly easier for batsmen, fielders, and spectators to see against the background than a red ball. White balls are also used in day matches where players wear coloured clothing, as a red ball can be harder to distinguish against coloured kit. All professional T20 and ODI cricket uses white balls, and most club and recreational evening matches follow the same standard.

Does a white leather ball swing and seam the same way as a red ball?

Yes — the aerodynamic principles that produce swing and seam movement are the same regardless of ball colour. The leather construction, seam height, and surface condition determine how the ball moves through the air and off the pitch. The colour is a surface treatment only. One practical difference is that white balls can deteriorate more visibly in terms of surface condition during play — scuff marks and discolouration are more apparent on white leather than on red. At professional level this is managed by using two balls simultaneously (one from each end), replaced at set intervals. For club matches, the ball should be inspected and replaced when surface condition affects play.

Can I use the same ball for red ball and white ball practice?

No — you should use each ball for its intended format only. Using a white ball in red ball training (or vice versa) is impractical and unnecessary. Keep your white Beamers for T20 and evening match practice and your red Beamers for traditional format training. This also extends the life of both sets of balls by using each in the conditions it's designed for.

What size should I buy for junior players?

Size 4.5 oz is the correct size for junior cricket — players under approximately 13 years of age. It is slightly smaller and lighter than the adult Size 5.5 oz , making it proportionally easier for younger players to grip, bowl, and bat against. Most junior cricket academies and school programmes use Size 4 for age groups up to Under-13. Size 5.5 oz is the standard adult size used from Under-15 upwards and in all senior cricket.

How many balls should a cricket club buy for a season?

For a club running regular T20 matches and training sessions, a practical starting stock is 10–15 white balls per season for match use, plus additional balls for net sessions. White balls used in matches should be retired to net practice once they are no longer match-suitable — they still have value for batting and bowling practice even after the surface deteriorates. Contact Anytime Sports for bulk pricing on multi-ball orders for clubs and academies.

Is the Grasshopper Beamer suitable for official affiliated matches?

The Beamer is suited for club recreational matches, academy fixtures, school cricket, and informal team games. For officially affiliated matches run by cricket boards or associations that specify an approved ball, check the specific ball requirements with your association before use. Most grassroots and recreational club fixtures do not specify a particular approved brand and the Beamer is appropriate for those.
