What is the difference between Kashmir Willow and English Willow?

English Willow is the premium cricket bat timber — lighter, more responsive, and with a superior natural fibre structure that delivers the best possible performance at the highest levels of the game. Kashmir Willow is India's own cricket bat wood — denser, heavier, and more durable than English Willow. The key practical differences are weight, performance ceiling, and durability. English Willow bats perform better at the highest club and competitive levels. Kashmir Willow bats last longer on rough and abrasive surfaces — the kind of hard, scuffing pitches common in Indian grassroots cricket — and cost significantly less. For players who play regularly on hard pitches or matting wickets and want a durable, well-built bat, Kashmir Willow at the Legend Ultimate level is a very practical choice.

Is the Puma Legend Ultimate good enough for competitive club cricket?

The Legend Ultimate is positioned for club and recreational play — it is Puma's top Kashmir Willow bat and performs accordingly within the Kashmir Willow category. For hard-surface and matting wicket cricket at club and school level, it is entirely appropriate. For competitive cricket on grass pitches at higher club levels, a Grade 2 or Grade 1 English Willow bat would typically be the preferred choice, as English Willow performs better on good-quality turf surfaces. The Legend Ultimate is the right bat for the right conditions — it excels on the surfaces where most Indian club and recreational cricket is actually played.

Does a Kashmir Willow bat need the same preparation as English Willow?

No — Kashmir Willow is denser than English Willow and does not require the same intensive preparation. You don't need to oil it multiple times or spend hours on progressive knocking in before use. A light coat of linseed oil on the face and edges, followed by a session or two of light mallet work to settle the surface, is sufficient preparation before facing a hard ball. Kashmir Willow handles the demands of play better from the outset without the extended conditioning that English Willow requires.

Why does the mid-low sweet spot suit front-foot batting?

The sweet spot is the zone on the blade where mass and spring combine for maximum energy transfer. The mid-low position places this zone lower on the blade — aligned with the contact point of a committed front-foot drive to a full-pitched delivery. When you get fully forward and drive through the line, the ball meets the bat in the lower half of the blade. A mid-low sweet spot means that contact point falls in the power zone. For batsmen who drive frequently, play on the full, and look to hit through the covers and down the ground, the mid-low positioning rewards their natural game. A high or mid sweet spot would require the batsman to meet the ball higher on the blade — which is more natural for back-foot play and shots played at waist height.

How long will a Kashmir Willow bat last with regular use?

A well-maintained Kashmir Willow bat used for regular club or recreational cricket — two to three matches or practice sessions per week — can last two to three seasons or longer. The denser wood is more resistant to the scuffing and surface damage that comes from hard-surface play. Protect the edges and toe with a fibre tape or edge tape, store the bat in a cool dry place away from humidity and direct sunlight, and avoid using it on wet surfaces. Occasional light oiling through the season keeps the surface from drying out. With reasonable care, the Legend Ultimate will serve through multiple seasons of active use.
